Natural antimicrobial action with no bacterial resistance

Pathogens such as bacteria and viruses enter the body through breaks in your skin, or when they find a rich environment for their development such as in clogged and broken sebaceuos glands within the hair follicles (acne infections). This activity interrupts the repair and healing process of skin that has been damaged, and interfere the normal lay down of your skin cells. The human immune response is a two-pronged attack. Innate immunity identifies infectious agents by their pattern or structure, and mounts a broad, rapid response. Phagocytic cells (such as neutrophils and macrophages) and natural killer cells are released to fight the infection. A second form of immune response, adaptive (or acquired) immunity, takes several days to gear up its more targeted attack. Adaptive immunity recognizes previous contact with a specific microbe and directs its defense against that specific invader with antibodies and T-cells. Because many infections spread quickly, a fully functioning innate response is crucial to the health of an infected individual.

Pharmaceutical antibiotics are frequently used to reduce the number of bacteria but they often lead to bacterial resistance.

It is possible that antibiotics can aggravate acne symptoms, or replace a primary infection with a secondary acne infection.  Antibiotics may also cause yeast overgrowth symptoms, vaginal yeast infections, upset stomach, allergies, increased susceptibility to sun-damage, yellowing of teeth, decrease in absorption of some vitamins and minerals, and increased bacterial resistance

Some strains of bacteria mutate and become resistant to known pharmaceutical antibiotics. Bacteria, like all life forms, follow the simple rules of natural selection. Genetic changes that help an organism survive and reproduce in a challenging environment will be passed down to its progeny and thus become more prevalent. Bacteria cells can reproduce every 20 minutes; therefore, genetic change is very quick for them. Studies published by several dermatologists have revealed that acne-causing bacteria, called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), have developed strains that resist treatment by both systemic and topical forms of erythromycin, the active ingredient in many prescription acne medications.

Other studies have shown that at least one out of four acne patients have some strains of P. acnes which are resistant to tetracycline, erythromycin and clindamycin and are less sensitive to minocycline and doxycycline than in the past. The clinical significance is not entirely clear in those who have small numbers of resistant strains, but can be associated with treatment failure in those with high numbers of resistant P. acnes.
