Atopic Dermatitis: What Is It and What to Do About It

Everyone knows what basic rash symptoms look like.  But were you aware that these well known scaly patches of skin will sometimes arise out of nothing to do with an infection? A lot of times the skin condition known as eczema will be the underlying cause. This condition represents the inflammation of the outer layer of the skin known as the epidermis.

Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema that does not come from infections. Atopic dermatitis's main symptoms are the scalp, arms, legs and torso all being covered with scaly patches.  This skin condition’s symptoms also include the facial cheeks being chapped.  Signs of this hereditary skin condition usually begin to show around early childhood. As we age the condition spreads to additional parts of the body. Throughout late childhood and the teenage years the condition can show up on the inner elbows and knees.  In adulthood the affected areas will be the hands, around the eyelids, and on the genitals. During the most serious of cases it will spread over every one of these parts of the body. In most cases it will look red, swollen, and cracked. The worse case scenarios are when it will ooze out tissue fluid and then crust over itself.

While many people refer to atopic dermatitis as allergic skin (dermatitis means inflammation of the skin while atopic refers to diseases that may be associated with allergies), there exist many cases where allergies play no part in the cause of their appearance. As opposed to the culprit being the usual suspects of foods, soaps or detergents, eczema will come on its own schedule.

It must be noted however that eczema dry skin does usually rear its ugly head when the air is cold and dry during the months of winter. Frequent washing can aggravate the situation and cause the condition to be a little more entrenched. In addition we are sad to note that moisturizing will not be of much benefit either as the skin here is not dry but simply inflamed.

Luckily the degrees of the symptoms do not worsen as we age (although they are found on different part of the body) and the condition is not contagious. In fact the instances when it is usually most serious are during childhood. Some will experience its symptoms more during certain seasons (mainly summer or winter), while others will have not seasonal fluctuations. It is also a dormant condition, meaning that one can suffer it considerably, and then have it subside for extensive periods of time before any subsequent outbreak.

Treating eczema related conditions such as atopic dermatitis starts with minimizing the itching of it. As good as it may feel to itch it, that would only aggravate the condition which makes it last longer and potentially spread further. Medicinal solutions are found in the form of prescription strength steroids, or cortisone creams. Be sure to use only mild strength creams ranging from 0.5% to 1% when applying to children's skin or to more sensitive areas such as the groin or the face. When you have the condition as an adult or on thicker areas of the skin such as the trunks, arms, or legs, a more potent cortisone (steroid) formula is in order. These will include fluocinonide, clobetasol, and triamcinolone.

Treatments for dermatitis that are not based on steroids include Burrow's solution. This is a pharmacological preparation made of aluminum acetate that is dissolved in water. Its antibacterial properties can help dry up atopic dermatitis if and when it is oozing tissue fluid.
