Acne Cysts
What are they?
Cysts are a nuisance, but they rarely become cancerous or malignant. They can get inflamed if the contents of the cyst rupture into the surrounding skin. This makes them red and painful, and they may discharge yellow pus. Occasionally bacteria enter the cyst and cause an infection which resembles a boil. When this happens, antibiotics such as flucloxacillin taken by mouth and minor surgery may be needed to relieve the pressure and pain.
Treatment
If you have a cyst, ask your dermatologist's or doctor's advice.
Small cysts (eg. less than 5 mm) don't usually need treatment, but can be readily removed by a minor surgical procedure. Larger ones are usually removed because they are unsightly or because they have been inflamed.
Cysts are treated by making a small surgical opening into the skin and removing the sac (excision biopsy). This is done under local anaesthetic and may require stitches, removed a few days later.
Very occasionally the cyst recurs and needs further treatment.

There are 4 types of severe acne:
- Acne conglobata
- Acne fulminans
- Gram negative folliculitis
- Nodulocystic acne
These acne cysts or acne lumps can rupture, spreading the infection into nearby skin tissue, and can result in scarring.
Acne conglobata is a chronic and severe form of acne vulgaris showing:
- Deep abscesses
- Inflammation
- Severe damage to the skin
- Scarring
- Comedones (blackheads)
are obvious and widespread, often occurring on the face, neck, trunk, upper
arms and/or buttocks
- Inflammatory nodules form around multiple comedones and grow until they
break down and discharge pus. Deep ulcers may form under the nodules,
producing keloid-type scars, and crusts may form over deeply ulcerated nodules
- Abscesses can form deep, irregular scars
- Acne conglobata may be preceded by acne cysts, papules or pustules that do
not heal, but instead rapidly deteriorate. Occasionally, it flares up in acne
that had been dormant for many years.
Acne fulminans has a sudden onset of very destructive inflammation.
- Severe and often ulcerating acne
- Fever
- Inflammation and pain in joints, especially hips and knees. It is like a
seronegative arthropathy but without the HLA-B27 association3.
- A person who develops acne fulminans may have had unsuccessful treatment
for another form of severe acne
Gram negative folliculitis is caused by bacterial infection that
follows long-term antibiotic treatment.
Nodulocystic acne is severe acne with cysts. They may occur in
isolation or be widespread over the face, neck, scalp, back, chest and shoulders.
They can be painful.
Acne cysts are nodules of inflammation. A cyst may be filled with thick, yellow pus-like fluid and is inflamed and infected. If a cyst is drained, it must be done under sterile conditions.

"I am 33 yrs old and have had cystic acne for 10 years. I did not like being on antibiotics all the time and tried dozens of other products before I found yours. I can't say that it completely prevents the cysts from appearing but they are much less frequent and much less severe. The cream has also helped the dark patches that appeared on my face while I was pregnant with my sons. Thank you for your help!
Shannon Bloemker. MA. US. "
This has worked the best for my son's acne & scarring. I like it as a night cream also. This is our 2nd order.
Thanks, Juliann Cloyd, SD, USA.
Tina Doomes. AI, US
I have been using the cream on my back, chest and shoulders for acne breakouts and to reduce minor scarring left from previous breakouts. I have only been using the cream for a few weeks but already the breakouts have been greatly reduced and I am seeing much improvement in the scarring already! Donna Hensley, Illinois, USA.
