How to Understand Goth Fashion
Black is certainly one of the main staples of Goth fashion, and has been for a number of years. However, black is such a versatile color, and it takes more than putting on a black outfit to call yourself a Goth. While the Goth subculture itself is not about fashion, the way you dress tells the world how you perceive yourself.
What is the purpose of dressing like a Goth? To express yourself. Black is a good place to start, but many Goths add varying shades of gray and even white to their outfits.
Goth styles can be downright colorful these days. We're starting to see rich tones such as dark red or royal blue, and even hot pink showing up in such outfits. But still, one thing remains consistent: Black is the primary color.
Accessorizing is very important to dressing in the Goth style. The style is characterized by lots of jewelry and often lots of piercings. Jewelry is silver or pewter, and usually chunky or dramatic.
Another important part of someone's identity is religious symbols, which are often worn as pendants. Gloves and sleeves (arm warmers) are often worn, as are patterned tights. Striped or fishnet tights are a way to work color into Goth fashion.
If you're looking to dress in the Goth style, it's easy to find clothes that will work. The local thrift store is a great place to start. You can find lots of stuff there for cheap that you can alter!cut it, dye it, or add studs to make it truly yours.
Of course, because there are more people than ever interested in Goth now, many stores cater to this and have lines of clothing available that will suit as well. Make the outfit your own with accessories and jewelry.
Remember, there are thousands of different ways to dress according to Goth fashion. You'd have a hard time finding two Goths dressed alike; it's all about individuality.
