Why Body Building Stretch Marks Occur?
Stretch Marks appearing during bodybuilding are not a pleasant surprise. When bodybuilders notice the irritating, purplish-red marks emerge across their growing muscles, they might think it’s because of irritation from sweating or overexertion.

But when the marks refuse to go away after a while they realize that they are not a just a temporary reaction but may become quite permanent and bothersome.

What causes "Body Building" stretch marks?
First, let’s begin by considering that the skin is the largest organ and one of the most complex of the body. An important functions of the skin is to act as a selective barrier or filter between the body and the surrounding environment.

It also functions to retain body fluids, protect against disease, eliminate waste products, and regulate body temperature. Because of the rich supply of nerves the skin is also a sensory organ of touch, pain, pressure, heat and cold. And it needs to be flexible, to distend and retract to be able to accommodate to the ever changing postural, weight, water retention and movements of a living body.

The skin has a remarkable ability to stretch but as we grow older our skin's elasticity weakens. There are two proteins that are essential building blocks of the skin. Collagen is the basic building block that allows the skin to bind and elastin is the protein which gives the skin its ability to stretch.

There are three layers of skin: the epidermis (or outer layer), the dermis (the elastic, resilient middle layer), and the subcutaneous tissue (the deepest layer). The middle and deep layers contain all the structures that give skin its strength and elasticity, and are home to other important structures like the hair roots and sweat glands. Stretch marks (also known as stria atrophica) form in the dermis.

When bodybuilders get stretch marks it is the direct result of tearing within the middle layer of the skin due to trauma, “over-stretching” or breaking apart of collagen and elastin cells located deep in the tissues because of pull and stretch beyond their ability to give when they are building muscle mass and thus putting on weight too quickly. At these times, the skin actually rips and tears. The tiny tears heal, resulting in scar tissues that show up as stretch marks.

Stretch marks also may occur if bodybuilders use steroid containing skin creams or ointments, such as hydrocortisone, or when their body releases steroid type hormones from the adrenal cortex during stressful periods on the body for more than a few weeks, or when a person has to take high doses of oral corticosteroids for months or longer.

At first, stretch marks often appear as small, red, pink, purple or dark brown depressed streaks in the skin, ranging in width from one-tenth of an inch to four inches. Fortunately, stretch marks often turn lighter and almost disappear over time.

There are a number of ways to prevent getting stretch marks, primarily by building yourself up slowly and not trying to get massive fast. Slow and steady wins the race. When you are building muscle, try to lose weight at the same time, as to some extent this will help balance for some of the muscle growth and reduce the stress on the dermis.

If you smoke, quit. As smoking reduces the elasticity of your skin, plus it is really bad for your health and training efforts.
