BODY WEIGHT – Role in the causation of Stretch Marks/ Striae

The skin is the first visible organ of our body and the general health of a person is reflected in it. Obesity is a common finding among women and obese women are prone to striae. BMI or the Body Mass Index. The index used to measure obesity in a person is the BMI or the Body Mass Index.

BMI is an approximate measure of the weight for height in adults. It is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared. BMI gives an indication of the total body weight. In children, weight for height tables are used as BMI does not give an accurate measure of body fat in them.

The following BMI shows the range from grossly underweight to obese.

Under 20 – Grossly underweight, can definitely afford to gain weight.
20-25 – Healthy weight range for a young middle aged adult person.
23- 28 – Healthy weight range for older adults.
26-30 – Mildly overweight.
Over 30 – Very overweight: obese.

BMI calculations will wrongly overestimate the amount of body fat in body builders, athletes and pregnant women and will underestimate the amount of body fat in the elderly and in those who are bed ridden or immobile which causes them to have muscle wasting. Thus BMI calculations would be wrong in the above cases.

Rapid weight gain seen in conditions like obesity, overweight, pregnancy, puberty, prolonged steroid mediation use and in Cushings syndrome result in overstretching of the skin rapidly over a short period of time. This causes tears in the elastin and collagen tissue of the dermis. They appear reddish / purplish colored at first and later fade and becomes silvery white.

A person on diet, constantly off and on it gains and loses weight rapidly and is thus prone to stretch marks. If a girl had stretch marks during puberty, she is likely to have striae/ stretch marks during her pregnancy period. Also a woman who had striae during one pregnancy is likely to have them in her next pregnancy. If a mother had striae during her pregnancies, then her daughter is also more likely to get them. So there is also a genetic factor involved in the pattern of weight gain and the amount of weight gain in pregnancy.

Steps for Stretch Marks Prevention

1. The first step is to avoid gaining or lossing weight rapidly. By losing or gaining weight at a steady pace, time is given to the skin to adjust its elasticity and hence stretch marks are prevented.

2. Most women can safely lose 0.5 -1% of their body weight per week and men can lose 0.5-1.5% of their body weight per week. Losing weight faster than this does not give enough time for the skin to adapt to stretching. To maintain this steady pace during weight loss, the help of doctors or dietitians or weight loss programs should be sought.

3. In pregnancy, the recommended amount of weight gain is between 25-34 pounds. Gaining more weight than this causes stretch marks.

4. Athletes who do bulk exercise programs increase their muscle mass rapidly and are at risk of developing stretch marks. A proper exercise regimen can help prevent this.

5. Adolescent growth spurt results in a rapid increase in body weight and height. This causes stretch marks which usually fade away with time.
