Scars may present themselves after you’ve experienced a cut, scrape, surgical incision, or burn. Scars can lead to an array of functional, cosmetic and psychological consequences. What is a scar?

A scar is a manifestation of the skin's natural healing process. Once the skin or damaged tissue is wounded, the body releases collagen to mend the damage. Collagen is a protein that reattaches itself to the damaged skin.  Collagen fibers are a major component of the extracellular matrix that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside. Initially, a scar is red because blood vessels are created while the body forms scar tissue. As the wound heals, a temporary crust forms and covers it to keep it safe from foreign debris that may infect the wound.  This protective cover will eventually fall of and leave behind a scar.

Because of bad habits or the need for social acceptance more and more people are becoming affected by scars left behind after some sort of surgery.  Some of the most common scar provoking surgeries are: cosmetic surgery, heart surgery, knee surgery, etc.  These operations are a necessity and the patient is later faced with a scar mark that is usually difficult to erase.

That is why it is so important to start treating a possible scar before it is fully formed and near impossible to erase completely.

Scar Treatments

A scar is difficult to remove. However, there are treatments that can alter a scar's appearance. These procedures range from the application of over-the-counter creams to treat post-operation scars. To diminish possible tissue damage it is important that the wound be cleaned and covered. Avoid picking at the scab because this action breaks the collagen and allows germs to enter the wound.  Once you’ve treated a scar you need to be patient and let time do its part. As time goes by a scar will become smaller and the color will fade.

However, additional treatment is required for some scars. While some procedures are more effective for keloids and hypertrophic scars, surgery scars left behind by heart surgery, for example, need extra help to heal.

Surgery
The surgical procedure for scars is referred to as scar revision because the procedure modifies the scar's appearance and, according to a membership survey of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), is averaged at a cost of $1,129 in 2003.

This procedure works well on scars that are wide or long, but other treatments may not be recommended for some conditions such as keloids because a surgical incision could cause a new scar and create another keloid. To reduce the risk of post-surgery scars, surgery may be followed by the injection of cortisone steroids that may cause insomnia or other side effects.

Steroid Injections
Steroid injection is a singular form of treatment for scars, particularly keloid and hypertophic scars. Corticosteroids are an anti-inflammatory drug that helps to lessen the scar's red color and thickness. The treatment flattens the scar and helps with itching. According to a member of the American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD) a steroid injection may cost anywhere from $150 or more per scar.

Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is the removal of a layer of the skin's surface. Scars including those caused by acne are smoothed or sanded by an instrument. This procedure costs approximately $150 per treatment.

Silicone gel sheets
Silicone gel sheets can be purchased over-the-counter. The sheets are worn over the scar area to seal moisture and are mostly used for burn scar treatments. They help with itching and to reduce scar thickness and color. Cost of sheets for small wounds ranges from $30 to $50.

Alternative treatment
